FAQ

Hi, How can we help ?

High performance micro-connectors

CMM Micro connectors

What does CMM stand for?

In French, Connecteur Micro-Millimetrique or micro-millimetric connector. Its is a 2mm pitch connector.

Board to board, board to wire and wire to wire, CMM connectors give the designer a wide choice of configurations in data transmissions (HF or LF) and high power supplies (HP). The connector is available in mixed layout or in all signal.

Is there a locking system?

Yes. For the CMM100 & 200, an optional latch offers the security of interconnection. For the CMM220, 320/340 and CMM Multi-Mix, an internal locking system is available (jackscrew mechanism).

What is the CMM product range by Nicomatic?

Nicomatic offers 4 product families : CMM100/200 series, CMM220 series, CMM320/340 series and CMM Multi-Mix series :

a.
CMM 100, simple row of contacts, signal (LF) only
CMM 200, double row of contacts, signal (LF) only

b.
CMM 220 : double row of contacts, this connector benefits from the option of a mixed layout, giving the designers a choice of high frequency, high power, fiber optic (upon request) and low frequency.

c.
CMM 320, three rows environment with up to 16 special contacts (up to 120 LF contacts).
CMM 340, three rows with up to 64 special contacts if no signal contact is used.

d.

CMM Multi-Mix, 2 or 3 rows with possibility to mix HF, HP and LF contacts of same type in one connector.

What is the maximum number of contacts in a CMM connector?

CMM 100, 02 to25
CMM 200, 04 to 50
CMM 220, 04 to 60 (15 contacts HP/HF max.)
CMM 320, 06 to 120 (20 contacts HP/HF max.)
CMM 340, 06 to 120 (64 contacts HP/HF max.)

Could you specify which termination styles are available?

The following termination styles are available : board solder, surface mount, crimped on cable or solder on cable and pressfit.

Does CMM comply with an inflammability standard?

Yes, UL 94-V0 norm.

What is the maximum intensity for high frequency?

up to 30 A depending on cable and test routine used.

What is the maximum frequency of the coaxial contacts?

Up to 11 Ghz (depends on the cable used and test routine followed).

If you remove a contact, can you reinsert?

Yes. This is a 1 time reinsertion for LF crimp contacts, 50 cycles for special contacts HF/HP series 30 (Coaxmatic 30) and 5 cycles for special contacts HF/HP series 22 (Coaxmatic 22).

Can we use CMM micro-connectors at 70 000 ft high altitude?

The contacts are qualified regarding withstanding voltage at high altitude (70 000 ft) according to MIL DTL 55302-3F standards.

Do CMM work under 250°C temperature using 3 ampers per contact?

Yes. They are qualified to function under 3A @250°C (without flame exposure) during up to 15mn.

Does Nicomatic provide a ECCN / EAR code?

No, Nicomatic is not submitted to ECCN / EAR. Products are in the category "not controlled", origin: France.

What material is used for the backpotting moulds?

Polyethylen hd (PE hd) ou polypropylen (PP).

What spacer to use between 2 boards?

7.3mm spacer (+/-0.5mm) is standardised. For longer spacers, it is recommended to make tests before.

RoHS : what is the status?

All CMM are RoHS compatible.

RoHS : has the soldering process changed due to moving to Lead Free (gold flash) terminals?

The gold flash plating is backward and forward compatible. Backward means soldered with tin lead and forward with pure tin soldering process. Between the 2 processes there can be a difference in temperature of 20 to 30C and 10 to 30 seconds. Gold flash plating withstands all the different curves, which is a big advantage compared to tin/lead or pure tin.
This also means that you can use your pure tin or tin/lead soldering process for CMM connectors, the choice being dependant more on the other components of the board and the decision to have a total RoHS compliant product.

Is it possible to use CMM under extreme vibrations?

Yes. The connector has been developed to perform under conditions of extreme vibration. It can be used in a Formula 1 or in a fighter ! (Shock severity: 100g for 6 ms vibration 0,75 mm, 10g RMS 6 hours long random with superimposed sinusoid. No intermitances measured when using on HSLI (High Speed Logic Interrupt) detector with a trip threshold of 2 ns).

Can we use CMM in high temperature conditions?

Yes. Thanks to the insulator made of fiber glass filled thermoplastic, the temperature can reach up to 260C. Standard cycling temperature ranges from -60°C to +260°C.

Is it possible to get a mixed layout in the same micro-connector?

CMM as a highly modular standard system allowing up to 20 million configurations!

Therefore, numerous configurations are possible given the type of connector. For example, in a CMM 220 configurations are limited by the space up to 15 cavities. In a CMM320, 32 contacts can be mixed with 20 special contacts "Coaxmatic30". In a CMM340, these possibilities are much higher.
A mixed version of CMM320 and CMM340 allows the best combination in terms of mixed layout and space.

What material do you recommend for backpotting?

Stycast 2651 MM and Catalyst 9 (8%to 10%): P/N Stycast 2651-40 CAT 9

Is it possible to change the polarization on CMM220 connectors (if yes, how many placements do you have)?

The polarization key can be moved every 2mm. In a CMM 220 connector with 24 ways, we get 11 positions. Add to the P/N "KLL" ("K" means direction 1 towards contact 1, and 2 represents the opposite direction ; "LL" means the number of the shift).

What is the recommended withdrawal force for a wire crimped on C12468?

J24 Crimp tool setting 7 (=3,3 daN) or J26 Crimp tool setting 6 (=4,7 daN).

What is the difference between "SS" and "ZS"?

As a general rule NICOMATIC coaxial contacts are always like 30-nnnn-xx. What means xx ?

The first letter x is related to the inner contact

The second letter x is related to the outer (shielding) contact

S = crimp

Z = solder

Do you have a recommended torque figure for tightening the CMM 220 series?

The general recommended torque is 20cNm.

Do you have different versions of the CMM catalogue?

Why cannot we mount a F22H fixing with connectors in S or C type?

As shown underneath, it is not possible to use a latch key to squeeze / lock the screw nut.

What is the Reverse fixings usage?

When the current comes from a PCB and out, the designer prefers to put the female on the PCB and male on cable or flex rigid PCB. The option of reverse fixing allows to use the F fixings on the female (CMM 222) and then the M fixing on the male connectors (CMM 221) whereas it is normally not possible. It is a practical solution especially appreciated in a number of applications.

Are CMM contact sockets made of beryllium copper compliant with RoHS and REACH?

Yes. We don't use pure beryllium for the contact sockets, but a beryllium++(<=2%) copper alloy. That is authorized and compliant with RoHS & REACH regulations.

Which fixings can you recommend for 2mm PCBs?

M12 for Y female
F22 F24 for Y male
F23/F25/F26/F30 for V male
PS : F23 and F26 have the same characteristic only the head of the screw is different. Please refer to the CMM Catalogue Guidelines
Comment: F24 is more recommended than F22 for a 2mm board

What is the smaller AWG cable that we can use for CMM micro-connectors?

We go as small as AWG32 thanks to a gauge reducer. Please refer to catalogue page 112 (May 2011 catalogue version).

What vibration test do you have for CMM micro-connectors?

CMM micro-connectors are submitted to vibration test after being submitted to life test (2 500 mating/unmating cycles) and of course they are mated (between 2 connectors and not 1 connector to PCB). The 3-axis vibration test allows to check the signal stability (no interruption greater than 1 micro second), which is a requirement for MIL-DTL-55302F standard.

Do you recommend a moulding form for the backpotting of the CMM?

Yes. NICOMATIC offers disposable backpotting moulds for CMM connectors : on-site harnessing is simplified thanks to a superior retention of crimped wires.

Is there a waterproof version of the CMM mixed connector?

No. But you can use our silicon interfacial seal which has an extra protection for the connector:
- Anti water streaming function
- Protection against condensing, vapour
- Anti dust function

You can consult our custom design team to develop the right bespoke solution you may need under customsolution@nicomatic.fr

At what withstanding voltage can CMM micro-connectors be used?

LF contacts: 1 200 V RMS
HP 22 series: 900 V RMS
HP 30 series: 1 500 V RMS
(sea level figures only)

What are the wire colour codes as per MIL-STD-681?

Basic colour codes:
0 = black
1 = brown
2 = red
3 = orange
4 = yellow
5 = green
6 = blue
7 = violet
8 = grey
9 = white

Can CMM hold with a dielectric withstanding voltage of 1300v at 60Hz for 1 minute?

Applications with voltage used at 1 500v Ac exist, so this should not be a problem.

The best recommendation is to test the connector inside your own environment condition.

We need to know the relative dielectric constant "Er" for the insulator body?

The insulation is PTFE (Teflon). The "Er" value is 2,10.

What is Nicomatic position on the LVDS signals which tend to be more and more used?

LVDS is becoming more and more important, DMM Micro-D Mix connector has been created for this trend and meets 100 ohm impedance required for LVDS. Nicomatic special 4D floating connector also meets LVDS requirements and has been tested and approved by some prestigious worldwide clients. CMM also can accept LVDS signal @ 400 MHz, impedance 100 Ohm. Please contact us.

Please advise if the 75ohm contact (female connector 222E00M16-0008-2326-ZS-75) will mate properly to the 50ohm contact (male connector 221D00F26-0008-1400-45?

Yes, it will mate properly. No problem.

Can you provide an approximate weight for your CMM320 and DMM220 connectors?

It is difficult to give a standard weight of CMM320 or DMM220 as it varies with the fixing and number of contacts but it is definitively a few grams for example:322Y036H01 is 4.5g and 322Y054H05 is 5.9g.

FOR DMM 10 contacts for example :D222SH-10-D03 is 2.13g

What is the thickness of nickel and gold plating for CMM322YL and 321YL connectors?

CMM321:
Contact area is copper alloy/ Ni (2µ) + Au 1µ
Contact tail is copper alloy / Ni (2µ) + Au flash 0.1µ
CMM322:
Body is copper Alloy / Ni 2 µ+ Au 0.2 µ
Socket boby is Beryllium Alloy / Ni 2 µ + Au 1.25 µ

Nickel 2µ is used as a barrier against migration of Au. If you put Au directly on copper that would lead to gold pollution and then to oxidation, so there will be a very bad contact resistance.

DMM Micro D Mix connectors

What is DMM?

DMM Micro D Mix connectors are a board to board, board to wire, wire to wire and front or rear panel connector with a fully modular and hybrid range.

All series are dedicated to cable and printed circuit board applications. They offer many advantages vs. the traditional Micro-D MIL-DTL-83513G normalized connectors.

DMMs are mechanically strong (metal connector shell - 6061 type alloy w/ chemical Ni 10µm) and are EMI/RFI 360° protected.

Why use a DMM instead of a micro-d or sub-d connector?

- Saves space: lower profile, high density package & small footprint

- Full modularity: choose signal, power or coax contacts

- easier maintenance: crimp contacts are removable

- Higher flexibility: options for front/rear panel mount, straight/90°, cable/pcb

- Shorter lead-time & lower MOD

What material is used for DMMs?

Shell: Aluminum 6061 type alloy w/ chemical nickel plating 10µm

Insert: Special PPS ranked UL 94-V0

Jackscrew: passivated stainless steel 300 series

What is the insert retention?

50 pounds per sq. inch

What is the DMM connector spacing?

It differs if you are on a PCB to PCB or PCB to wire configuration.

It is small as we are in a low profile connector system. Have a look on page 8.

How many insert arrangements do you have thru the range?

If you take into account all possibilities today (1 to 4 rows, number of different contacts, termination styles, fixings & combinations), we reach over 2 million configurations.

Are DMM connectors waterproof or sealed?

No. In the standard DMM range, the connectors are not IP norm compatible or sealed.

However, our custom made design department may have the right solutions for you: customsolution@nicomatic.com

Are DMM connectors hermetic?

No. Please consult our custom design department for your hermetical connector.

What is the maximum number of LF signal contacts that I can place?

120 LF contacts.

What shell profile do you recommend if I want backpotting?

If you need backpotting at the rear side of the connector, select SL/CL shells with a high profile of 13mm.

It is also possible to use the medium profile shells of 10mm SP/CP or EP in the case of a fully equipped connector with special contacts (HP or HF).

Does Nicomatic also provide backshells for DMM connectors?

Yes. Our backshells are a good protection against mechanical/physical constraints and against EMI. (EMI 360° protected).

What is a mono backshell?

The mono backshell is a one part accessory with a very thin profile. It can be used with medium or long shell profiles.

Our standard backshells are with a straight entry. They are available with elliptical or circular entry according to the shell size used.

Generally, these backshells are used with smaller AWG cables and where space is more critical.

Using a backshell can avoid the backpotting as the function maintains the cable and protects the contact. It is more flexible as you can reinsert the contacts (that are removable).

What is a split backshell?

A split backshell is an accessory with high mechanical and EMI 360° protection.

It is a 2 part design with an easy and fast mounting and dismounting process. It can be used with all Nicomatic DMM series and all shell types.

They are available in a straight entry in standard.

Do you have any options for shield termination?

Yes. EMI/RFI shield termination bands are commonly used to attach a braid or a shield to a backshell. You can get either pre coiled (P/N 17206) or flat (P/N 17205) bands as well as a banding tool kit (P/N C17472).

For our backshells we have chosen a width of 1/8''. Termination bands are qualified to the M85049/128 specifications.

Do you have any instructions for the mounting and dismounting of DMM backshells?

Yes. You can find it in the library online.

ICBS01 for Mono backshells.

There is also a video available online.

What functions do we fulfill with DMM backshells?

- EMI/RFI 360°

- Mechanical protection for better retention (cables-contacts)

- Low susceptibility to interferance (clean data transfer w/ great impedance transfer value)

- Prehension - gripping ability for bigger connections

- Aesthetic design

Do you deliver the fixings with the backshells?

It depends if you use a mono or split.

In mono backshells, the fixing is delivered automatically. You do not need to order separately.

In split backshells, you have the choice between 2 types of fixings so you need to order them separately given your own need:

- B51 fixing is used for backshell to backshell connection

- B53 fixing is used for any other configuration (mostly used fixing)

What is inside your complete banding tool kit?

Under kit C17472 you will get:

- mManual banding tool instructions

- Banding tool

- Adjustment wrench

- Rollover tool

Do you have a standard part numbering for the backshells?

Yes, have a look in the Product Finder.

What are the mounting tools for backshells?

You have two separate P/Ns:

- C17596 for the mounting/dismounting tool

- C17597 for the insertion clip

Have you fulfilled any EMC testing for the backshells?

Yes. EMC test according to MIL-STD-1377 (screened cable/connector method)

What impedance transfer value did you get for the backshells?

Our value is great.

The transfer impedance is < 200mOhm from 10 Khz to 400Mhz according to MIL-STD-1377.

Microflex flexible harness

No electrical interruption greater than one microsecond during vibration test, no sign of loosening,
fracture or other deterioration to the mounting hardware after the test.

What is the operating temperature for Microflex?

It depends.

Female-female or Octopus versions:
-55°C to +105°C for Polyester cable
-55°C to +125°C for Polyimide cable
Solderpin-female versions:
-40°C to +105°C for Polyester cable
-40°C to +125°C for Polyimide cable

Do you have a shielding option for Microflex?

Yes, but it is available upon request such as many other options: higher temperature, other material, controlled
impedance & LVDS... Contact us.

What is the maximum number of contacts I can have?

Up to 60 LF contacts are available.

Can a Microflex Solderpin Male - Female construction withstand vibrations at 15 gn?

As the solderpin side is soldered, it generally does not comply with high vibration.

Therefore we recommend to use the Female - Female or Octopus versions.

The Solderpin - Male can also be used in high vibration but needs to pass thru a dedicated customer process on PCB to protect the soldered part.

Can we go over a 15 gn vibration?

Yes. According to the test routines other than MIL, our technical features reach higher performances: up to 20 gn (Female - Female & Octopus).

OMM micro-circular connectors

What is an OMM 8-series micro-circular connector?

OMM is a small round connector based on the same materials as the market star CMM connector.

It is used with LF signal contacts and is modular with the possible configurations from 1 to 8 pins. It has 1 central captive screw for a secure connection.

Why use a OMM connector?

It is reliable in small spaces & MIL type harsh environments.

It can save up to 50% of weight and space vs. a CMM that generally has 2 ears needed for the fixings on each side.

Where to use a OMM connector?

Because of its small size & high performance, this connector is mainly used UAVs, UVS, robotics, civil security, defense and aero markets.

What is the captive screw?

The captive screw allows to make the interconnection first and then to screw (you do not need to screw at the same time as you interconnect).

What is the total mated length in PCB to PCB configuration, and in PCB to wire?

The total mated length is 7.8mm in PCB to PCB and 12,6mm in PCB to wire.

The outer diameter is 11mm.

Is the level of reliability the same as CMM connectors?

OMM micro-circular connectors withstand temperature variations from -60 to +260 degrees Celsius, have gold-plated contacts (3A up to 5A) hooked in NICOMATIC housing to make them capable of up to 2,500 mating cycles. The solution is based on the same level of reliability as the CMM series micro connectors under MIL-DTL-55302F.

What are the possible pin terminations?

Either pre-wired, SMT or straight tail signal terminations:

- Male straight PCB: Y for PCB 0.8-2mm and YL for PCB 1.5-4mm

- Male straight SMT: TL for PCB with any thickness

- Female to crimp on cable: C for AWG22 and S for AWG 24-28

What is the overall weight of an OMM connector?

In its full 8-pin version, it is less than 2 gr.!

Can I add a gasket to an OMM?

This is not standard. There are however many other possibilities in terms of configurations and features that can be added in custom design: eg. shielding, gasket, backpotting... Contact us.

Are the contacts removable?

Yes.

How do you unscrew the mated pair of OMM?

You do it at the rear side of the connector with a standard 2mm hexagonal tool (same as CMM).

Can you make an other size for the housing than the 8-position?

The standard size is the 8-position housing (OMM 8-Series).

In custom design, a 6 and 10-position housing is available upon request. Consult us.

What is the admissible current per contact?

3A.

Why should I use a F24L fixing rather than a F24 in my OMM?

F24L is adapted for PCBs with thickness 3.5 to 6mm max.

Can I select the cavities to place my contacts as I want?

Yes. The cavity loading selection is done according to the LF signal contact position number. View the product datasheet on page 2 to see the possibilities.

Connectors for flexible circuits & PCB

CrimpFlex crimping equipment

What type of circuit can be crimped ?

All types of flexible circuits whose thickness ranges from 75µ to 350µ in standard.

Depending on the press (1.27mm or 2.54, manual or pneumatic) and on the material itself, we can use thicknesses from 50µ to 500µ. Please contact us.

What is the energy used to make the crimping press work ?

Example with 10500-SA(P):
The energy is pneumatic only (no electrical) : 6 bar (hydropneumatic)
Effort : 1 800 kg/cm2
Reel contacts speed : 5cm/s roughly
Capacity : up to 30 cycles per minute (well trained operator)

Does the standard machine configuration allow to crimp square male contacts ?

Yes, there is a pneumatic press made for square male contacts under P/N 10500-SAP. Please contact us.

How many contacts can be crimped in one press stroke ?

On our 2.54mm machines:

- manual: 25

- pneumatic: 36 contacts

On our 1.27mm machines:

- manual: 50

What is the production cycle rate of the pneumatic & manual presses ?

Manual press : 350 cycles / hour (up to 420)
Pneumatic press : 1 500 cycles / hour (up to 1 800)

Can you adjust the air pressure of the pneumatic press ?

It is possible but not recommended. The risk is to break the machine or lead to malfunction. NICOMATIC presets the press at 4 to 6bar air-pressure.

Is it possible to crimp all the male solder tabs with the male toolings ?

Yes, except for the male solder tab (ref. 11612) which must be crimped with the female tooling. Male contact (ref. 13595) is also crimped the same way.

Can a customer crimp the CRIMPFLEX contacts with any crimp press on the market ?

No. In order to get the perfect crimping of your CRIMPFLEX contacts you need to use CRIMPFLEX presses.

All this equipment is manufactured in-house.

Is it possible to crimp 11612 & 13595 contacts with a 10025-MO-M press ?

No. As the cutting part is as long as that of female contacts (2.6mm), you need to crimp using a female tooling for the male 11612 and 13595 contacts. It is an exception.
Therefore, please either order a 10025-MOF press or change the tooling on your 10025-MO to the female one.

Crimpflex™ Contacts

What does CRIMPFLEX stand for ?

Patent & trademark. The Crimpflex connection system complies with the most rigorous electrical & mechanical requirements. The crimping of the contacts is obtained by piercing the conductor in 6 points. This ensures excellent mechanical retention by 2 points & electric contact by 4 points with the lowest possible contact resistance.

What is the difference between a male solder tab & a male contact ?

A solder tab can be soldered or fit into I.C. sockets or wipe contacts whereas the male contact will mate with most female connectors designed to accept a 0.635mm pin headers.

What is the direct current rating per contact ?

3 A (Dc) in standard or 5A (Ac) whether in 1.27mm pitch or 2.54mm pitch. The 2.54mm contacts have also been successfully tested at 5.5 A (Dc) in a number of applications by our customers.

What is the maximum current rate per contact that Nicomatic can guarantee?

Due to the way we crimp thru the conductive layer, we get excellent results. At 3A the temperature goes up. For example with 7 contacts at 3A for 1hour 54 cable temperature goes up by 84°C if outside temperature is 30°C global temperature is over 105°C. So you need to choose carefully your cable (our cable polyester is guaranteed at 105°C, and we can provide polyimide cable that goes up to 125°C according to customer appliance).

What is the difference between a low insertion force female contact & a high insertion force female contact ?

The high insertion female contact (ref 10025) is recommended for the automotive market thanks to an excellent resistance to vibrations.

A lower number of mating cycles results from increased retention for high vibration applications. The low insertion female contact (ref. 11506) is recommended for up to 500 mating cycles when using gold plated contacts and up to 50 mating cycles for tin plated contacts. Ref 10025 is suggested for up to 10/15 cycles. Beyond, use rather 11506 part number.

Have also a look on our H-Flex female contact that groups together the properties of the above.

Whiskers: is the tin plated area matt or bright?

Our tin-plated is bright.

Whiskers: has Nicomatic fulfilled any tin whiskers growth test on tin plated parts (eg. JEDEC JESD201)?

There is no test made directly on the parts but we passed the JEDEC JESD201 on the electrolitical bath (the process) to prevent whisker growth risk.

Whiskers: is tin plated area nickel underplated?

Yes. There is a minimum of 1.27µ of nickel underplating.

What is the purity of gold on the contacts surface for 10025-31 and 14106-31 female contacts?

Au: 99,35 -99.55% / Ni: 0.10 - 0.15% / Carbon: 0.20 - 0.30% / Hardness 110 - 170 VPN / Density: 16.5 - 17.5 g/cm3.

Can 1.27mm crimpflex pierce the same thickness range as the 2.54mm?

The piercing part of the 1.27mm crimpflex contact is slightly higher than 2.54mm (1.2mm vs 1.1 mm) and a lot larger so it can pierce thicker subtract than 2.54mm crimp contact (1.27 crimp contacts is more robust and won't bend as the 2.54 crimp contacts) for example you can crimp 0.6mm PVC for EL.

What is so special about the 14106 female contact?

Nicomatic 14106-x2 female contact is a multi-insertion & multi-flex contact designed to offer a
stable insertion force and low contact resistance over a large number of mating
cycles. It is more resistant to damage by bent or angled pins, primarily on test devices.

Crimpflex™ housings

What is the CRIMPFLEX product range ?

Nicomatic offers male pins & female contacts with a pitch of 2.54mm and 1.27mm, the corresponding housings, male solder tabs (standard, standard short, retention, retention short, double retention and long), flexcable jumpers (in male/male, male/female, female/female and double row configurations), FFCs (0.5, 0.8, 1, 1.25, 1.27, 2.54mm pitch), manual & pneumatic presses to crimp contacts (the Crimpflex connector system is one of the few connector systems available for flat conductor products, especially membrane switches, printed ink circuits, flexible PCBs and flat flexible cable (FFC jumper assemblies).

Are Nicomatic housings compatible with the standards of the market ?

Yes, they are compatible with all existing standards.

Do Nicomatic housings allow polarization & locking ?

With many product references, the product range of Nicomatic is one of the broadest on the market. Some housings allow polarization, other allow locking and a number offers both possibilities.
Consult our CrimPflex catalogue pages 19 to 25.

What is the operating temperature of the Crimpflex connectors for flexible circuits ?

- 40°C to + 150°C.

What is the OJxx/OJHxx CRIMPFLEX housing?

OJ and OJH housing offer an extra mechanical protection on both sides of the latch to prevent it from breaking or tearing in vibration environments. It also has an other feature with the addition of 4 chamfers for a better insertion guiding. It gives extra features comparing to OL and OM housings with the same latched function.

It is also compatible with all market standards.

What is the difference between OMxx & OMHxx housings ?

OM has little holes to accept contacts on only one side of the housing.

OMH has little holes on both sides of the housing so that it can be placed with the desired position, either with latch on top or reverse.

All housings with the "H" feature offer the same flexibility of design.

Discrete wire to flat cable

FFC Cables & Jumpers

CrimpFlex™ Jumper Cables

What is the cable used for flexcable jumpers ?

The flat cables used for Nicomatic flexcable jumpers equipped with Crimpflex connectors are made of flat copper conductors both sides adhesive bonded to aluminium foils.

Is it possible to connect a flatcable with a AWG cable?

Yes. NICOMATIC provides an interconnect solution which allows to associate the two systems:
- 2SLxx (female housing)
- 1SMxx (male housing)
- 12472 (female contacts)
- 12471 (male contacts)

Can a Crimpflex FFC jumper hold at 120°C during one to two hours?

The contacts hold at 150°C and FFC at 105°C. You need to select a polyimide material for your FFC as the temperature characteristics are much better:
-55°C to +105°C for Polyester cable
-55°C to +125°C for Polyimide cable (higher temperatures achievable upon request)

What UL certificates are applicable to CrimpFlex jumper cables?

UL E 235596 / E 232912 / E 203388 (Appliance Wiring Material - Component)

Do you have a solution with contacts bending on the edge of the cable?

Yes, of course.

You can choose the appropriate contact in our range and bend to the crimping direction (-90°) or to the opposite side of the crimping (+90°).

What if I need to place the housings in different direction on both ends of my jumper?

It is possible with our standard part numbering by choosing the R option; the crimping is done on the opposite side to the left, and therefore you can place the housing differently to the other side too.

How do you measure the cable length?

The cable length is measured from end to end:

- if with housings on each end, then you measure from one housing end to the other

- if with contacts on one side and a housing on the other, then you measure from the cable end where the contact is till the housing end on the other (you do not count the length taken by the contact outside of the cable)

Does Nicomatic provide any mating PCB headers & connectors for the Jumpers?

Yes. Depending on your female housing, you will have the option to connect with a series of PCB headers & connectors:

ex. in 2.54mm pitch:

1 row OF/OFH w/ square or round pin headers (eg. 12-17-111-xx-1)

2 row 4Fxx w/ square or round pin headers (eg. 12-17-111-xx-1)

1 row 2Exx w/ walled pin headers (eg. 1Y-10-111-xx-1)

2 row 4Exx w/ walled pin headers (eg. 1Y-20-111-xx-1)

1 row OJ/OJH - OM/OMH - OL/OLH w/ male headers (eg. 1L-10-111-xx-1)

etc.

Metal domes & components

Domes arrays

What is an array of domes ?

It is a polyester carrier with pre-positioned domes. It can be described as a custom made array according to the specification of our customers.

What are the advantages of an array of domes compared to bulk orders ?

The array will make it possible to place at once all the keys of your MMI switch. This you will avoid all problems related to dome positionning, lacking dome double or reverse dome.

Can we speak of a standard array ?

The array with kiss cuts is an array with a series of cuts in the polyester/adhesive carrier around the dome. It is considered as a standard product. However, P.A.S. arrays tend also to become a standard. It depends on the usage.

What is a P.A.S type array ?

P.A.S. (Pre-assembled spacer). It is an additional layer applied under the retaining layer with channels enabling a volume of air around the dome. The spacer can be made of different materials, for example with polyester 0.1mm thick or transparent PET 0.1mm thick.
The ventilation is made via channels in the spacer layer connecting the various dome chambers.

Round & Double Radius Domes

What is the tolerance on the location of the actuator to the dome center?

This is called sweet spot. It can vary depending on the dome size and criteria (click ratio -trip force). Main figures are:
N4 = 0.3-0.5mm
N5 = 0.5-08 mm
N6 =1mm
N8.4 =1.5mm
N12.2= 2.5-3mm
Good to know: the more the actuator is centred the best tactile and life expectancy you get.

What kind of plating process should be used on PCB to fit to Nicomatic domes?

Gold electrolytic is recommanded, but tin plated or screened silver ink can be used.

Switch’Air™ 4 legged domes

What do you mean by SWITCH'AIR?

It is a patent & trademark of Nicomatic. The Switch'Air dome helps to create a cushion of air between the domes so that they do not stick together. This process ensures an efficient and reliable automatic placement.

What does "dimple" stand for ?

There are 2 types of dimple : dimple & micro-dimple. The micro-dimple exists for 6mm domes. Thanks to its small size it allows, in case of dust on the circuit, to eliminate the dust and make the contact.
The dimple on the 8.4mm,10mm & 12.2mm is recommanded for flexible circuits in order to limit the travel.

What is the life span of Nicomatic domes ?

Nicomatic tests reach up to 10 million activations. We guarantee 1 million activations for 100% of our production. This guarantee can go up to 5 million activations as indicated on our drawings.

What tests are generally made for domes?

- Life expectancy
- Overload test
- Electrical measurements (contact resistance, current capacity...)
- Incoming inspection
- O.S.O test
- Overstroke test
- Sweet Spot test (position of the actuator shifted from the dome centre).

What are the different forms of packaging ?

All domes are sold in bulk or on custom made arrays. 4-legged domes are also packaged in tubes (to be used on high speed assembly processes or Pick & Place machines) or tape & reel (8.4, 10 and 12.2mm diameter domes).

What are the different metal dome categories class A, B and C? What does it mean?

By default, the standard dome is delivered in class D. However, it is possible to request tighter tolerances as shown underneath:

A class (upon request):Tolerance center is reduced to +/- 15g (N8.4,N10), and to +/-20g for N12.2.
B class (upon request). Tolerance is never below the trip force indicated in the spec of the D class
C class (upon request). Tolerance is never above the trip force indicated in the spec of the D class
D class = standard dome with standard tolerance

What are the patterns that I should use for Nicomatic domes?

We have 2 recommendations depending on the type of dome:

> Pattern for round domes:  4 and 5mm
> Pattern for 4-legged domes: 6, 8.4, 10 and 12.2mm

Please ask technic@nicomatic.fr

What is the max. shift from the dome center to get a very similar activation level?

It depends very much on the type of dome usually between 1mm and 1.5mm. Contact us.

Is there a difference in performance between N12.2-4L-340 and 420g domes in the Tease Effect?

No real difference for the tease effect which is the distance the dome needs to travel after clicking before reaching bottom.

N12.2-4L-340-21 Approx. teasing distance = 0.16mm
N12.4L-420-21 Approx. teasing distance = 0.15mm

What is the tolerance on the location of the actuator to the dome center?

This is called sweet spot. It can vary depending on the dome size and criteria (click ratio -trip force). Main figures are:
N4 = 0.3-0.5mm
N5 = 0.5-08 mm
N6 =1mm
N8.4 =1.5mm
N12.2= 2.5-3mm
Good to know: the more the actuator is centred the best tactile and life expectancy you get.

What is the bounce time for 12.2mm metal domes?

Bounce time is under 5 micro seconds.

Bounce definition: When a switch is actuated and contacts touch one another under the force of actuation, they are supposed to establish continuity in a single, crisp moment. Due to the mass of the moving contact and any elasticity inherent in the mechanism and/or contact materials, contacts will "bounce" upon closure for a period of milliseconds before coming to a full rest and providing unbroken contact.

What kind of plating process should be used on PCB to fit to Nicomatic domes?

Gold electrolytic is recommanded, but tin plated or screened silver ink can be used.

I want to use ENIG plating finish (120-240micron Ni + 2-4micron Au). Is it appropriate for the NICOMATIC domes ?

Yes.

What type of activator is used for N6mm domes?

It is a flat surface 1.5mm dia. actuator.
